My name is Fahren Norton, and I am the creator behind Montane Pottery. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, many of my earliest memories are of working with my hands and creating art, and it has stuck with me throughout my life even as everything else has changed. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2010 focusing on functional pottery, printmaking and oil painting. Not long after, I transplanted to Summit County where I began a family and recently built my own pottery studio in our basement- making my long time dream a reality. My creations are inspired by geometric patterns of native textiles and the natural surroundings of mountain life.
I named my business Montane Pottery for the Montane life zone that Summit County inhabits. It is characterized by our high elevation (8,000-10,000 ft above sea level) and the specific flora and fauna that live in this unique environment. The art medium I typically use is a white clay with many under-glazed and transparent glaze designs. I enjoy adding little surprise details to each piece making it feel more intimately yours.
